Resume format — how to write a resume that gets read

Section order, length, and what makes a good resume in 2026 across corporate, clinical, and academic lanes.

Format carries signal before anyone reads a single bullet.

Resume format is regional and role-specific. US and Australian corporate resumes: one page early career, two pages with depth. UK CVs often run longer. Academic CVs break length rules — publications matter more than page count.

Standard order: contact, summary, experience, education, skills. Licensed professions: credentials before experience. Creative roles: portfolio link above the fold.

How to start a resume

Import an existing file or build from your master profile in DocuResume. Pick the career track first — corporate, academic, profession, trades, early career, or creative — so section labels and PDF export match employer expectations.

Write the summary last. Draft experience bullets from raw notes, run ATS score, then compress the summary to the strongest theme the bullets prove.

What makes a good resume

Outcomes with numbers where honest. Verbs that match seniority (led, built, delivered — not "assisted with" for lead roles). No unexplained gaps without a one-line note. Consistent dates and titles.

Tailor per application: match score shows gaps; fix summary and top two bullets; export a role-specific PDF name.
